Working at Mon Health

One thing I love about working at Mon Health is that it is big enough to advance your career, yet small enough to be known by name and genuinely feel cared about every day.
Responsibilities
The CVICU at Mon Health Medical Center is a 10-bed critical care unit. The CVICU staff admits patients directly from the operating room who have undergone open heart surgery for bypass, valve repair and replacement, and aortic aneurysm repair.
The CVICU also frequently admits vascular surgery patients and medical ICU overflow patients.
The typical nurse to patient ratio is 1:1 or 1:2 with nurses able to care for more than two patients if they are lower acuity such as step-down level of care or awaiting discharge.
New RNs orienting to the CVICU are typically given 16 weeks of orientation working directly with preceptors and attending didactic lectures.
Some of the medical therapies exclusive to the CVICU are Intra-Aortic Balloon pump and the Impella short-term ventricular assist device. The unit frequently admits patients with Swan-Ganz pulmonary artery catheters, arterial lines, and ventilators.
A strong emphasis is placed on recruiting RNs who possess good critical thinking and communication skills, a desire for autonomy, and enthusiasm for continuous learning and honing of skills and knowledge. The leadership structure of the CVICU supports a clinical manager or charge nurse on every shift, a unit-based educator, and a director who oversees the CVICU and other clinical areas. Specialty certification is encouraged and supported.
